  7. Overview
  8. MobileDB-PC is a Windows 95/98/NT application that enables users to view and 
  9. edit MobileDB format databases.  MobileDB is a database application for the 
  10. 3Com line of Palm handheld computers.  Any databases created using this 
  11. MobileDB-PC application can be viewed on the Palm using MobileDB Lite 
  12. (freeware) or edited on the Palm using MobileDB for the Palm (Shareware, 
  13. $14.95).  MobileDB-PC is freeware and maybe freely distributed.  For more

  21. Installation
  22. This program does not require any installation.  Just launch the MobileDB-PC 
  23. executable.  You may want to create an icon on your desktop to easily launch the 
  24. application if you use it freqently.  
  25.  
  26. Create a new MobileDB database          
  27. Select "New" from the "File" menu.   This will open a dialog box requesting the 
  28. new database name and size (in columns and rows).  The user will then have the 
  29. ability to add data to each cell and save the information as a MobileDB database.

  31. Opening an existing MobileDB database    
  32. Select "Open" from the "File" menu.   This will open the standard "open file" dialog 
  33. box.   The user is required to select a .pdb (Palm database formatted) file to be 
  34. opened by the application.  Please note that this must be a Palm database in the 
  35. MobileDB format.  Generally, the user will find their MobileDB databases that 
  36. have been backed up from their Palm in their c:\Palm\<username>\backups 
  37. directory.  Note that when MobileDB-PC saves a database, it will create a backup 
  38. of the old database (if it is in the same directory) with a .pd_ extension.  You will 
  39. need to select the file type to "All Files (*.*)" to view these files.

  41. Importing data to MobileDB-PC
  42. Select "Import" from the "File" menu to import a comma separated (delimted) , 
  43. tab separated, or semi-colon separated file.   These files are generally a .csv file 
  44. type and are useful to import and export data to and from different database or 
  45. spreadsheet applications including MS Access and MS Excel.  For example, if 
  46. you have an Excel spreadsheet, you can save it as a comma separated file (.csv) 
  47. and "import" it into MobileDB-PC to be saved as a MobileDB database.

  49. Save a MobileDB database
  50. From the "File" menu, select "Save" or "Save As" to save the information in the 
  51. cells as a MobileDB database.  If the user has already selected the database file 
  52. name by opening it as a MobileDB database or previously saving it, then "Save" 
  53. will save the database with the previously selected database name and location.  
  54. To select a new database filename and location, use the "Save As" menu item.  
  55. When saving a database with a filename that already exists in that location, the 
  56. previous database will be backed up as a ".pd_" file type.  It is not advisable to 
  57. save the database in the "backups" directory with the same filename as the 
  58. original database as the file may be overwritten during the next Palm hotsync.

  60. Export a MobileDB database
  61. Once a MobileDB database has been opened into the MobileDB-PC application, 
  62. the data can be exported to a more generic file type for use in another 
  63. application. To export select the "Export" item from the "File" menu.   The data 
  64. can be saved as a comma separated (delimited), tab separated, or semi-colon 
  65. separated.

  67. Install a MobileDB database
  68. Once the data has been entered into the MobileDB-PC application, it can be 
  69. automatically set to be installed on the Palm by selecting the "Install" from the 
  70. "File" menu.  Please note that this database will not be permanently saved 
  71. anywhere on the hard drive after the Palm installation unless the users explicitly 
  72. "Saves" the database.  Also, this will set the database to be installed for the user 
  73. selected in the "DB Properties" dialog box of the "Edit" file menu.  Behind the 
  74. scenes, this action is saving a copy of the database in the 
  75. c:\palm\<username>\install directory.  During the next hotsync this user, the 
  76. database will be installed and deleted from this directory.

  78. Editing the Database Information
  79. To edit the database information in MobileDB-PC, use the following commands.

  81. ? Highlight a cell by single clicking on it.  Type text into the cell to change the 
  82. cell text.

  84. ? The tab key will move the highlight from cell to cell.
  85.  
  86. ? Double click the cell to "expand" it and see the entire 200-character entry.

  88. ? Modify the width of the columns by selecting and "pulling" the line between 
  89. the columns in the top row.

  91. ? Right click on a cell to cut/copy/paste a cell.

  93. ? To sort on a column, select any item in that column and select "Sort Normal" 
  94. or "Sort Reverse" from the "Tools" menu.

  96. ? Append, Insert, or Delete a column or row by highlighting the row/column and 
  97. selecting the appropriate command from the "Tools" menu.

  101. You should carefully read the following terms and conditions before using this 
  102. software.  Unless you have a different license agreement signed by Mobile 
  103. Generation Software, your use of this software indicates your acceptance of this 
  104. license agreement and warranty.

  107. MobileDB-PC is freeware and may be used at no charge by any Windows 
  108. 95/98/NT user.

  111. The laws of the State of Colorado shall govern this agreement.

  114. THIS SOFTWARE AND THE ACCOMPANYING FILES ARE SOLD "AS IS" AND 
  115. WITHOUT WARRANTIES AS TO PERFORMANCE OR MERCHANTABILITY 
  116. OR ANY OTHER WARRANTIES WHETHER EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED.  
  117. Because of the various hardware and software environments into which 
  118. MobileDB-PC may be utilized, NO WARRANTY OF FITNESS FOR A 
  119. PARTICULAR PURPOSE IS OFFERED.

  121. Good data processing procedure dictates that any program be thoroughly tested 
  122. with non-critical data before relying on it. The user must assume the entire risk of 
  123. using the program.  ANY LIABILITY OF THE SELLER WILL BE LIMITED 
  124. EXCLUSIVELY TO PRODUCT REPLACEMENT OR REFUND OF PURCHASE

  128. MobileDB-PC is freeware and may be used for free by any PalmOS user for 
  129. personal use.

  132. You are hereby licensed to make as many copies of the MobileDB-PC freeware 
  133. application and documentation as you  wish; give exact copies of the original 
  134. versions to anyone.  You may distribute MobileDB-PC and documentation in its 
  135. unmodified form via electronic means.  There is no charge for any of the above.

  138. such copies, however made; and from distributing the software and/or 
  139. documentation with other products (commercial or otherwise) without prior written
